We are Peter, Alice and Miriam, 3 graduates from the illustration BA at Camberwell College of Arts. We run Studio Operative, a relatively new independent arts publishers based in Peckham in South London. We publish Limner, a new bi-annual critical journal of contemporary illustration and visual communication.
We need your help to publish issue 3 and to establish Limner as a self sustaining publication!
Limner began as a photocopied and then risographed zine and has developed quickly between issues with the last issue being a full colour litho printed, open sewn bound book. Featuring the writing and image making of over 30 practitioners, it was a diverse publication showcasing some of the most exciting and varied work being produced today.
Reflecting the developing and diverse practice of illustration, the format of Limner changes with each issue.
Limner #2 (ISBN 9780-957522305) was well received and is on sale world wide. We are distributed in Europe by Antenne Books and were recently one of the top magazine picks at Foyles bookshop.
Despite this, it remains financially difficult. The first two issues were developed through personal fundraising and awaiting payments from retailers and expenses to run the studio make it hard to maintain capital. By supporting our campaign, you will go a long way to helping make the journal and the studio secure, providing us the opportunity to bring interesting ideas and exciting visual work to the public.
The journal aims to be a relatively informal print space, developing the dialogues that exist in art school and between practitioners daily into a prolonged and documented discussion about the industry, it’s education, the theoretical ideas that surround it and it’s social impact.
It is not, however, informal in its print quality. We place a high value on reproduction, for the journal to be a collectible document of excellent image making, and to display this image making at its best.
The journal’s content is accessible and diverse. The written contributions being relevant to anyone interested in the creative process. Our last issue discussed community and fairness in creative projects, the role that procrastination plays in the working process, a manifesto regarding the survival of printed matter in the digital age and an essay discussing drawing as an act of sexual release and the work of Tom of Finland, R.Crumb and Namio Harukawa.
Limner #3 (ISSN 2052-8574) will include, among others, fictional writing by Jay Cover from Nous Vous that discusses his process, an excerpt of Stina Lofgren’s writing on survival strategies when working with a language that’s being commodified, Tom Harrad on occular distraction and an illustrated essay by Malte Opperman and Rosie Eveleigh from Jiggling Atoms on the making of scientific imagery.
We are currently developing issue 3 which will be a larger format of 210 x 280mm and produced in black and white, with one colour section and tipped in text on different paper stocks. This issue is designed by Traven T. Croves and printed by Cassochrome.
It features the work of:
Jay Cover
Romy Blumel
Aidan Koch
Sam Rees
Evan Meister
Chris Harnan
Sinead Evans
Grace Helmer and Charlotte Mei Jones
Malte Opperman and Rosie Eveleigh
Peter Nencini

We hope to continue to develop Limner with each issue, to continue to push new and innovative ideas within contemporary illustration and create a publication that champions the illustrators voice for discussion.
Our aim is to fill a unique space that shows illustration in it’s development and at it’s boundaries, to celebrate its uniqueness as a discipline and champion it’s role in the world.
More than anything we want to promote the best of the image making as we see it at the moment, the work that is challenging and innovative and interested in the future.
We would like to thank our contributors for their generosity, kindness and support of this project and to thank you in advance (fingers crossed) for helping us make this publication possible.
Risques et défis
Limner #3 is virtually complete, we have all of the contributors art work and all that remains are slight tweaks in the design. We are working with Cassochrome to print the journal and have budgeted accordingly in terms of their quotes.
There is always the possibility of delays in delivery. We have factored potential problems with printing and delivery into our timescale but sometimes this is not enough. We will keep backers informed of any change in the promised delivery time.
However, as this is our 3rd issue, and 8th publication, we have experience in delivering print publications to deadline, and dealing with distribution and fluctuations in costs, etc - so are confident if we are successfully funded we can deliver the publication on time to our backers.
More than that, we are passionate about Limner and have worked hard to get it to where it is today funding the running of the studio through extra part time jobs.
We love being able to champion interesting visual work and promoting new practitioners and want to continue doing it for as long as possible!
We are really appreciative of any help and support that will enable us to develop Limner and Studio Operative further and hope that you can see the value in this project!
